Tribute to the Late Sayar Aung Htut (Dr. Nay Win Maung)

1. Perhaps, this is a late comment, but is very befitting to the recent dramatic events that took place during a couple of weeks after his departure.
2. Sayar Aung Htut left a short piece of note before his last breath that said:
“1. We climbed the greasy pole (chaw taing) knowing that it is a greasy pole, and we do not think it is a mistake.
2. We thought it would make a fair progress by the first attempt; but it is wrong. Therefore, I am ready to take the blame; but I dare to take the test to prove my goodwill is not wrong.
3………………..
4. I shall keep on climbing the greasy pole.”
3. Now, every one of us must admit that he was not wrong; all the efforts and endeavours he had exerted have been paid off. The empathy of the President and the Government towards the people desire had been shown by:
• The signing of the cease fire agreement between the Government and KNU
• The release of the Prisoners of Conscience
4. These are the significant changes for our country. But, we all know that this is just a dawn of a new day and the journey towards the democratic and developed Myanmar will be long, treacherous and there are mountains after mountains to climb.
5. In such times, we need a lot of Aung Htuts. Sayar Aung Htut, even though we did not knew each other and never met, I desperately miss you and I want to hear what you would say upon these changes, and see you reach the top of the greasy pole and grab the flag.
6. However, we are not disheartened because we have the best people like Our President U Thein Sein, Thura U Shwe Man, U Aung Min and U Soe Thein etc. and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo, Min Ko Naing and others who truly love our country and our people and desire to rebuild the nation, and determine to do so with their utmost until the goal is achieved.
7. I truly believe that we all can enjoy the heydays of democracy at the end of the day even though it is hard to accomplish it. And I wish Sayar Aung Htut see all these from holy abode and rest in peace.
